JULIA PALERMO

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, a chaotic city that has the gift of staying beautiful in any light or time of the day. Life kept taking me out of this place many times – and probably it will be like this for a while – but Rio has always been a surprise in its striking and diverse aesthetic to me. Addicted to this visual excitement, I fell in love with the cameras.

I’m thankful for my 13 years of adventures in Cinematography for traveling around my giant country and finding so much light and darkness, so much joy and pain, from the sadness abysm of a destroyed forest in Acrelandia to the thrill of a helicopter ride in the Iguazu falls. Work also had me travelling to Tokyo, Paris, Istambul, Medellin, Mo-i-Rana, London, Hong Kong, Beirut and so many other unique places where I could find new reasons to keep looking to people and landscape with the eyes of a lens.

In 2006 the editor of Clam, a French art magazine, asked me to tell them a little bit about my work and life experiences. After this conversation, I realized why the fascination of seeing beauty among the chaos was so strong on me. I told them I visited Lebanon recently pacified in 1994.  The light hazes highlighted by the destruction dust and the buildings falling apart taught me to see beyond my comfort zone. The sad part is that there is beauty on destruction, a good framing is enough, and the story fits inside the observer’s head. I guess this addiction to seeing beyond kept me going.
